JOSE DIAS
music & research
José Dias is a Portuguese musician, composer, researcher, and author currently based in the UK. He is part of the emerging new generation in Portuguese contemporary jazz, with his music strongly inspired by visual arts and literature.
As a composer and performer, Jose Dias has released several acclaimed albums, including "After Silence, Vol.1" (Clean Feed, 2019), which was described as 'an introspective masterpiece' by All About Jazz and was listed as one of the best albums of 2019 by Giornale della Musica. It's also considered one of the essential Portuguese jazz albums of the 21st century.
Dias's musical style deviates from traditional jazz language, exploring dialogues between various contemporary sound universes and emphasising experimentation as a central element.
In addition to his musical career, Jose Dias is also a researcher. He has authored several research outputs, including the books "Jazz in Europe: Networking and Negotiating Identities" (Bloomsbury, 2019) and "Festa do Jazz" (INCM, 2020). He has also created a documentary titled "Those Who Make it Happen" (2016).
As a composer, Dias has scored music for various media, including contemporary dance, animation, film, television, and theatre.
Since relocating to the UK in 2016, he has been an Assistant Professor at Coventry University, focusing on popular music, jazz studies, and music and media.
Jose Dias continues to be an active and influential figure in the contemporary jazz scene, particularly in Portugal and the UK, where he is based in Manchester.
